Senior Structural Designer

Job Duties:

1) Lead the preparation of detailed construction drawings for steel and reinforced concrete structures using structural specifications, engineering calculations, sketches, detailed drawings, and design information according to project standards and procedures.

2) Lead a full range of drawing production work including problem analysis, design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.

3) Lead design on a variety of projects pertaining to industrial, manufacturing, and other clients ranging from facility modifications to new facilities.

4) Quality review 2D drafting and 3D modeling tasks. Design will be prepared using engineering standards and procedures.

5) Lead a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.

6) Responsible for quality review of structural designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.

7) Prepare structural calculations. Quality review design codes and specifications related to structural design requirements.

8) Design and draft structural elements and details.

9) Review design drawings within scope, budget and schedule.

10) Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into structural design and layouts.

11) Approve all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.

12) Participate in marketing and client development meetings.

13) Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff.

14) Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.

15) Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

16) Performs other duties as assigned

1) Bachelor Degree in drafting technology or related field and 13 years related experience required. May also have an Associate Degree and 14 years related experience or fifteen (15) years progressive detailing and design experience may substitute for the degree requirement.

2) Advanced understanding of design software such as: e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, Tekla, Smart plant 3D, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, RISA-3D, Navisworks and Excel to develop the design deliverables.

3) Expert knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

4) Expert knowledge in the theory and practices of structural discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

5) Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

6) Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

7) Strong analytical and problem solving skills, and attention to detail.

8) Previous experience working in Alberta or Canada project.


Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

1) Sitting, Standing, Walking, Talking, Hearing, Grasping, Fine Manipulation, Lifting up to 20 lbs., typing, pinching, substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers for sustained periods of time, ability to see and read PC screens, detect color coding, read fine print and normal size print.
