Job Description:

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Merchandise Space Planner to join our team on a 1-year contract. This role is ideal for individuals with retail experience, particularly those with a background in floor planning or space optimization in large retail environments like grocery stores or big-box retailers (e.g., Walmart). As a Merchandise Space Planner, you'll work closely with cross-functional teams to develop and execute floor plans, optimize product placement, and ensure that store layouts align with overall merchandising strategies.
You will be working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and will be responsible for tasks like re-flooring departments, optimizing space, and resolving discrepancies in layout (e.g., columns or other obstacles on the floor). If you’re passionate about retail space planning, have a strong business acumen, and enjoy collaborating with others, this could be the role for you.
Advantages
- Training Opportunity: Even if you don’t have experience with JDA or Plan-O-Gram, we offer a 2-week training program to help you get up to speed.
- You’ll work on a wide variety of projects, allowing you to build your skills in different areas of space planning and merchandising.
- Work closely with strategy teams and other departments to make real-time decisions that impact the store layout and product visibility.
- Build on your retail business experience, particularly if you have experience with larger-scale retail environments.
Responsibilities
- Work on various floor plan projects, such as reorganizing product categories (e.g., toy department, dolls vs. cars vs. Lego) and ensuring optimal product placement in alignment with the overall retail strategy.
- Work closely with internal teams such as the strategy team, merchandising, and category managers to implement and optimize floor plans.
- Spot issues in the layout, such as obstacles (e.g., columns or posts), and work with teams to find solutions.
- Manage multiple space planning projects, ensuring that each is executed on time, within budget, and meets the required specifications. Projects may vary in length and scope, so flexibility and organization are key.
- Collaborate with internal teams to plan new product sections (e.g., adding pet fridge sections) and incorporate them seamlessly into the store layout.
- Assist with optimizing store layouts to improve customer flow and increase product visibility, using data-driven insights to guide decisions.
Qualifications
Must-Haves
- College certificate or diploma in retail management, business, or a related field.
- Experience: 1-2 years of retail experience, with a focus on space planning, merchandising, or floor planning in a retail environment (grocery, big-box, or similar).
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical and business acumen, with the ability to assess floor plans and make improvements based on business goals.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing skills to work with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
Nice-to-Have:
- JDA Certification (preferred) or similar space planning software expertise.
- Plan-O-Gram experience (preferred), although training will be provided for the right candidate.
- Experience in large-scale retail environments (e.g., Walmart, grocery stores).
- Familiarity with store layout challenges and solutions (e.g., columns, in-store obstacles).
Summary
If you have the retail experience, project management skills, and an eye for space optimization, we encourage you to apply. This is a great opportunity to grow your career in a dynamic, fast-paced retail environment.
