tips to network your way into a new job
As Ricky discovered, you're often your own strongest champion! Sometimes you have to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone to build connections, especially if you're moving to a new city where you don't have an extensive network you can rely on. Though it can be intimidating, you can make valuable connections that can lead to a career you're passionate about. Here are some quick tips to build your network in a new city:
- Break down your fears about making the first move. Nothing ventured is nothing gained!
- LinkedIn is a great place to reach out to possible connections. Just make sure your message isn't all about you and what you stand to gain.
- When working with a recruiter, choose carefully! You need a partner you can rely on who understands your career goals and personality.
- Find what you have in common and start there. Learn about the person you want to connect with and see what else you have in common besides your careers.
- Be genuine and yourself. Don't pretend to be someone you're not, or lay on fake compliments to get in someone's good graces. Be yourself, you're enough, we promise!
- Start with something other than a request. Remember that networking is a two-way street. One person shouldn't have to do all the work. Ask yourself: how can we help each other or learn from one another?
